Postcard from Mystical Meteora

Magical, mystical and magnificent, these are all terms that have been used to describe Meteora the monastic city in the rocks. They all fit, they are all appropriate, the city in the sky takes the breath away.

It does not really matter how many pictures you may have seen there is nothing that can really prepare you for the first glimpse of Meteora in the Thessaly plain of Greece. Driving into the region when the first pillars with their monasteries appeared my heartbeat quickened and the excitement was almost overwhelming.

Meteora, City of monks in the Clouds

They are a spectacular site, an early morning mist would have been amazing and must add to the other worldly appearance. It did not grace me with it’s presence this time and it was necessary to use imagination to conjure up images of an ethereal blanket carpeting the plain. The huge pillars poking from it like lions teeth. The scene remains transfixing regardless.

There are twenty four monasteries in total of which seven are still active and two are specifically for nuns. The day was quite hazy and getting an image that truly captured the splendour of this amazing location was a challenge.

A ‘must visit’ destination is an often used cliche for me Meteora is one such place.
