The colours are great, love the depth of field but most amazing of all is …… how do they do that? Piling up those olives must be a herculean task of dexterity and concentration, but even more confusing is how do they close up without losing them all over the floor?
It is one of the great mysteries of life!
The souks are one of Marrakech’s main attractions. They surround the World Heritage site of Djemaa el Fna on almost all sides and are an irresistable draw away from the hyperactive square.
Olive mountains
They can be a bit of a trial by trader and impromptu guide but for those willing to take up the challenge, remaining polite but firm they are a great experience. Haggling can be great fun and is almost an art form in the souks of Morocco, just choose an upper limit and stick to it. It is a great feeling to barter towards a cherished souvenir and feel that a bargain has been found.
Getting back to the olives, they were generally a mild flavoured variety which may appeal to those that do not normally enjoy them. They are worth giving a try, perhaps with a tasty tajine.
