Travel porn; Inspiration for Gloomy Days

After an early winter, which surprised most of us with clear, sunny days throughout the usually dismal months of November and December, the wet, winter weather we’re more accustomed to in the United Kingdom has finally landed. Landed with a vengeance, since the turn of the year, apart from an inch of snow which remained in the garden for less than a day, we’ve only had wet, gloomy days to look forward to.

Grey, grey days, there’s little to inspire; when peering through the windows of warm homes at an outside world, which appears dreary. A UK winter usually involves rain in one form or another, heavy rain, constant showers or persistent drizzle, it’s the wet, cold which makes our winters so unpleasant.

Winters in Wonderland

There are places, which are blessed with beautiful, clear winters, where snow lays thick on the ground under blue skies and a low seasonal sun. Pristine wonderlands, where early morning frosted snow crunches under foot, rime ice grows from fences and posts or icicles decorate homes like crystal ornaments. In place of rain on window panes, they find amazing frosted patterns at first light, the envy of any artist.

“These are the clear, dry cold winters that many of us prefer, stunning wonderlands where Jack Frost seems to enjoy his overtime.”

For those of us less fortunate, living in countries which suffer mild, but wet winters, where even rural areas, buried deep in attractive landscapes, the view from the window is often dreary. It’s almost a relief that days are short in the depths of winter here.

Remaining upbeat in these circumstances can be challenging, waking up each day to be confronted by dreary weather is tough. To stay positive, it’s necessary to use every trick in the book, and a little travel inspiration fits the bill perfectly.

It’s a vehicle, which allows us to escape the dull routine of short days filled with constant rain, grey skies and dull moments. Stunning images which allow us to visualise ourselves walking barefoot through breaking waves on an exotic beach or absorbing the dramatic vista from the summit of a high mountain.

A little inspiration can go a long way: Daring to Dream

Even a moment of exposure to an inspiring image can be the catalyst, which motivates us to lace up our boots, dig out the mountain bike or pick up the camera. It can be the spark to finding our own adventure, even on a dull, dank day, a thousand miles from the nearest ‘paradise’.

The short, dull days of January are also the time many start thinking of their annual holidays. Browsing brochures and websites, maybe even visiting the local travel agents, researching, planning and booking.

“An image can inspire for years, decades even a lifetime, suddenly recalled in vivid detail when considering our next great adventure.”

Most of us have photographs from past trips and holidays, which can transport us back to sunnier climes, places and exact moments in an instant. We can often remember details from conversations, possibly even with loved ones now departed, memories can be both joyful and poignant. They are our memories, personal to the individual, even shared memories will be remembered differently by each person; we own our memories.

I shared this final image below on Instagram earlier today, the accompanying short caption discussed the subject of this post. However, while out walking “Spike”, the pocket wolf, with time to think, it seemed the topic needed expanding and illustrating with some further pictures.

This is part of the appeal of a blog, sharing adventures and inspiration with you, the reader; providing some escapism from short, gloomy days.
